To help attract the perfect freelancer, you need to ensure that you have the best brief. With competition for the best talent so high, and with the world moving towards freelance working, your brief needs to be accurate and eye catching.

‘BEST’ would have fit so neatly, but the A for Anything else is so important! It’s these little details that make all the difference. Hence we ruined our perfect mnemonic for it.

So here are the top things freelancers look for in a job description. 

Background

Your brief should be thoroughly detailed, but to the point. Your background is a key section, as not only does this set the tone of your brief, it helps give freelancers a good idea of what they are walking into. It enables them to understand what you are trying to achieve and also an idea of how long the contract will last, to see whether or not they will be available for that amount of time. This may also influence their day rate, if the contract is long term. 

Your background should answer the following questions:

  • Why are you hiring?

  • What problem are you trying to resolve?

Expectations

To help get the perfect match, expectations are incredibly important as this helps the freelancer understand what is expected of them. This should cover the expectations you have of the freelancer, to ensure you are finding the right talent. 

To help clearly define expectations, answer the following questions:

  • What experience should the freelancer have?

  • What projects should they have worked on previously?

  • How will success be measured? 

How success will be measured is key, as you and the freelancer need to be on the same page, to ensure you’re both working towards the same goal. The goal needs to not only be measurable but realistic. 

Skills

Related to expectations, the freelancer needs to understand what skills they need to help fulfil the brief. Would Invision or Photoshop be important for a Designer, or React, Python or Java for Developers? Would you consider other industry experience such as Medical, Automotive or Fashion? 

This not only includes any skills specific to completing the brief but any soft skills like team management, communication, problem solving etc. 

The Team

What does the chain of command look like and who are the key stakeholders? This helps show who is involved and who the freelancer will need to work with, to ensure the project can move forward, on time and in budget.

Anything else?

Is there anything else the freelancer should be made aware of? Location, do they need their own equipment?  Adding things like restaurants in the area, good things going on or events can really help make you more attractive to the community. These small details can help make or break it for a freelancer.

Remember, although your brief should be as detailed as possible to give the freelancer a good feel for the project, it should be concise and to the point. Too much detail could turn away great talent.
